William "Bill" J. Stephens

William “Bill” J. Stephens, age 64, of Chicago, passed away surrounded by the love of his family.

Bill was the beloved husband of Susan Stephens (nee Potempa), with whom he shared 38 wonderful years of marriage. Together they built a life centered on love, laughter, and family. He was the proud and devoted father of Allyson (Cody), Tyler (Amanda), and Layne (Tyrus), who were his greatest source of pride and joy.

He was the cherished brother of Inger (Greg). Bill was a loving Godfather to his niece, Janice (Nathaniel), and a devoted uncle to Dana (Mike), Jake (Amanda), Zachary (Katie), Brock, EJ, Samantha (Josh), and Sabrina. He was also a proud great-uncle to Rosalie, Melanie, Rowan, Declan, and Cameron. There are many cousins with whom he was close to and loved keeping in touch with.

Bill was preceded in death by his loving parents, Alwyn and Janice Stephens and his brother Charles Stephens.

A lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, Bill never lost faith in his team and cherished every opportunity to cheer them on. He found peace and excitement on the water, especially while muskie fishing at Lobster Lake and Leech Lake in Minnesota, as well as the Chain O’Lakes in Illinois. Whether casting a line or sharing stories at the dock, those moments brought him immense happiness.

Bill had a passion for coaching and never missed an opportunity to support young athletes. Whether it was baseball, football, or softball, he loved teaching, encouraging, and cheering on his children and others from the sidelines. His greatest victories were never measured by the scoreboard but by the memories he created with those he loved.

At home, Bill was happiest standing behind the grill, preparing meals for family and friends. He believed there was always room for one more at the table, and gatherings at his home were filled with good food, laughter, and lasting memories. His famous homemade Long Island Iced Teas became legendary among family and friends and will be fondly remembered at every future get-together.

Bill also loved attending concerts and live events, creating unforgettable experiences alongside Susan and their children. Whether enjoying music, a sporting event, or simply spending time together, he treasured every opportunity to make memories with those he loved.

Bill will be remembered for his generous heart, his unwavering love for his family, his sense of humor, and his ability to make everyone feel welcome. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the traditions he created, and the love he shared so freely.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
