Obituary

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Robert “Bob” J. Richter, who died on March 29, 2026, at the age of 89. A devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and dear friend, Bob will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Bob was born on May 5, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, and spent much of his early life in Park Ridge, Illinois. He attended Maine East High School and Monmouth College, where he swam and played tennis. He was known for his kindness, sense of humor, and generosity, always making those around him feel supported and cared for.

Bob proudly served in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1962, spending time stationed at Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan and achieving the rank of Lieutenant. He went on to work for the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years, where he earned the respect of colleagues through his strong work ethic, dedication, and leadership. Outside of his career, Bob enjoyed traveling, officiating swimming meets and found joy in spending time with family, being outdoors, and tending to his garden.

Bob shared a lifelong partnership with his wife, Joyce. The two met in 1962 at the Palmer House in Chicago, where Joyce was working for Northwest Orient Airlines and Bob was working for Braniff International Airways. Their relationship grew from that chance meeting, and they were married on May 23, 1964, building a life together centered on love, family, and commitment.

Above all, Bob was deeply devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Kaehler Richter; his daughters, Susan Corfield (David), Sandra Richter, and Lori Morrissey (Dennis); his seven grandchildren, Ryan and Thomas Corfield, Paige and Brett Tibbitts, and Robert, James, and Heidi Morrissey; and his sister, Karen Richter Herriott, all of whom will carry his memory forward. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Richter and Edna Hergenreder Richter.

A celebration of life will be held on May 23, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Glenview Community Church, 1000 Elm St., Glenview, Illinois. In memory of Bob, those who wish may consider making a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association.

He will be deeply missed and always remembered.
