Obituary

Mary Rose Sullivan passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025 at age 83.

Mary is predeceased by her parents, Denis and Rosetta (Campbell) Sullivan, her older brothers, Cornelius, Denis and Daniel, brother-in-law Rod Erickson, sister-in-law Mary Lou (Burns), and nephew Jim Sullivan.

Mary is survived by her younger brother Richard (Charlene), dear sisters Ellen (James) Berger, Patricia (Charles) Moore and Noreen Erickson, sister-in-law Mary Ellen (Spolek), nieces and nephews Joe, Neil, Bill, Erin, Dan, Matt, Patrick, Charlene, Sharon, Carol, Robbie, Richie, Jim, Michael, Mark, Charlie, Brian, Sarah, and Nora, as well as numerous great nieces and nephews, and many close cousins.

Mary was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, the fourth child and eldest daughter of eight children. She was designated 'woman of the house' at age nine when her mother Rosetta passed away in 1950.
Mary attended Visitation High School before graduating from Chicago Teachers College.
She started teaching, but changed course and became a successful banker in downtown Chicago, retiring as Vice-President at Associated Bank after years at Lake Shore National Bank.
Mary was also an early advocate for civil rights and women's rights, and was a quiet role model and support for many in her family. A throw pillow displayed in Mary's home since the 1980s reads 'A Woman's Place is in the House . . . and Senate.'

Mary spoiled her nieces and nephews and godchildren, and had an especially deep bond with her sisters.
She was family famous for her chocolate chip cookies and greeting cards with $2 bills.
Mary was kind, smart, generous, caring and independent, and was deeply devoted to her family and longtime close friends.
Her family is grateful for her memory and the many joys she brought those who knew and loved her.

In lieu of flowers please consider gifts to organizations Mary supported: Misericordia, Des Plaines Library, Greater Chicago Food Depository, WTTW, Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters, Salvation Army, or the Alzheimer's Foundation.
