Obituary

John E. Raffetto, a devoted family man and public servant who served his country in the World War II, died Tuesday, (Nov. 22, 2011) at home. He was 94. John was the beloved husband of Mary for 59 years; the devoted father of John C.; the loving grandfather of Michael; and the caring brother of Kathryn "Sis" Garvey. He gave his heart and soul to his family, always eager to help0 out in any way he could. He took great pleasure in the simple things in life, from picnics in the country to visits to the ballpark to playing matchbox cars and mini golf with his grandson. A veteran of World War II, John served with the Army in the Pacific theater for four years, receiving a number of medals. He was drafted before the attacks on Pearl Harbor and participated in the liberation of the Philippine Islands. He also served in New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago and Luzon. Among his honors were four bronze stars. When he returned to civilian life, he helped out in his father's tavern in the Lakeview neighborhood, and later went to work for Gillette jukebox company, keeping music machines stocked with the latest hits throughout the city of Chicago. Later in life, he worked for the Chicago Park District, where he helped to keep the city's parks beatuifully maintained. John was the son of the late Louis Raffetto and the late Margaret (Semeler) Raffetto. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his son and daughter-in-law, John and Kathy (Bergen); his grandson, Michael; his sister, Kathryn Garvey; and his nephew, John Garvey. He was preceded in death by his sister-in-law Ruth Weinschenk and her husband, Roy; and by his brother-in-law, John Garvey Sr. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Heart Association. Visitation Friday from 10 a.m. until time of serveice 11 a.m. at Kolbus-John V. May Funeral Home.
