Obituary

Eugene W. Beeler, formerly of Glendale, died Tuesday, May 3, 2011, after a brief illness in Chicago, where he had resided for the past three years.
He was a long time resident of Hardin County and the last of a long line of Beelers who farmed in and around Glendale. The youngest of 10 children, he was born Sept. 7, 1915, to Patrick H. (Pat) and Mary Alice Skees Beeler.
He graduated from Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Ind., where he was a member of the inter-collegiate basketball team, and in his final year won first prize in the annual Oratorical Contest, one of the school's highest honors. After graduation, he was employed by The Kroger Co., advancing rapidly to store manager in Nicholasville. In 1943, he returned to the family farm. His successful livestock and grain operation utilized methods considered innovative at the time. He was one of the earliest proponents in the state of raising hogs in confinement. He served on the Board of Directors of Southern States Cooperative in Elizabethtown. After retiring in 1980, he and his wife traveled throughout the United States and Europe.
In 1941, he married the former Linda Hagan of Louisville, who survives him. On May 28, they would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. When he and Linda moved to Chicago he began writing poetry. In anticipation of their 70th wedding anniversary, he wrote a lengthy poem to his wife in tribute to their life together and love for each other.
He also is survived by a daughter, Melanie Wank (George) of Palm Desert, Calif.; and a son, Eugene W. Beeler Jr. (Carolyn Kitty) of Park Ridge, Ill.; four grandchildren, Alexander Beeler, Dr. Margaret Beeler Stefani (Jay) of Cary, Ill., Elizabeth Beeler Boyle (Peter) of Chicago and Veronica Beeler of Venice, Calif.; and three great-grandchildren, Linda and Alexander Beeler Jr., and Blythe Stefani.
Preceding him in death was a son, Marc Evan Beeler.
The family requests expressions of sympathy, which are fully tax deductible, be made to the Marc Evan Beeler Journalism Scholarship Fund, c/o Institutional Advancement Office, Elizabethtown Community & Technical College, 600 College St. Road, Elizabethtown, KY 42701.
